SA: Council bans dogs running loose
ADELAIDE, April 20 AAP - The Adelaide City Council has moved to ban dog owners from
letting their animals run loose in the city's parklands and squares after a rottweiler
savaged two young girls.
The council last night passed a by-law which would require all dogs to be kept on a leash.
It also announced plans to put up 200 signs warning owners of the new restrictions,
which carried a fine of $200.
However, the council said it would allow a 14-day period of grace for all dog-owners
to become aware of the new requirements.
The action followed the attack on two girls, sisters aged six and nine, who were forced
to undergo plastic surgery for severe lacerations to the face and head.
The girls were set upon by the dog in Bonython Park during an outing with their mother
on Tuesday.
The dog responsible was one of three rottweilers being exercised in the park by their owner.
Adelaide City Council said it would also issue a destruction notice for the dog responsible
- although the owner still had seven days to appeal against such action.
