NSW: Police stop and search powers into effect from today

SYDNEY, Jan 1 AAP - New South Wales police will have the power to stop motorists and demand
identification under new laws coming into effect today.

The state government introduced the new powers in November after Lakemba Police Station was
sprayed with bullets in a late-night drive-by shooting.

Under the new powers, requested by Police Commissioner Peter Ryan, police can set up
roadblocks, search vehicles and demand driver and passenger identification when they suspect a
car has been used in a serious crime.
