Where do all these cool, calculating candidates come from? Whathappened to the passionate politicians who stirred us in the past?

My standard answer has been that in times of peace andprosperity like these, voters want - and ought to want - leaders whoare reasonably competent mechanics, able to keep the boring machineryof government in good operating condition.

But that only explains the demand for cool, calculatingcandidates. What explains the supply side?
